Photobox FAQ

Answers about Photobox image formats, local processing, file limits, transparency, EXIF, target-size compression, ZIP downloads and system sharing.

Is Photobox free, and do I need an account?

The tools are free to use and do not require an account. Open a tool, choose images and generate a downloadable copy.

Are my photos uploaded?

Selected image files are processed in your browser. Photobox does not send their contents to a server or store them in browser databases. Only interface preferences, such as language, are saved locally. Refreshing the page clears the editing session.

Which image formats can I open?

Use static JPEG, PNG or WebP files. Animated GIF, APNG and animated WebP are not accepted. HEIC and camera RAW formats such as DNG are not supported.

How many images can I process at once?

Compression, resizing and text watermarks accept up to 20 images. A grid collage accepts 2–9, and a photo stack accepts 2–6. The other tools take one image. Each input is limited to 25 MiB and 64 million source pixels; batch input is limited to 200 MiB.

Why is a large image rejected or a smaller output suggested?

Processing depends on both source decoding and output memory. The default output budget is 4096 pixels on the longest side and 16 million pixels in area; eligible high-memory desktops can use up to 8192 and 32 million. A smaller output cannot always make an unusually large source safe to decode.

Which browser features are required?

Use a current browser with module Workers, OffscreenCanvas and createImageBitmap. Pixel processing runs in a Worker rather than moving original-image work onto the interface thread. Actual image limits and available encoders vary by device.

What happens to transparency and metadata?

PNG and WebP exports can keep transparency; JPEG fills transparent areas with the selected background color. Pixel tools re-encode images without copying source EXIF/GPS. The EXIF editor instead preserves compressed pixels and unrelated metadata, and retains necessary orientation when removing EXIF.

Why did a target-size compression miss the target?

The quality search has a lower bound and a limited number of attempts. If no tested quality fits, you receive the smallest attempted result with its actual size. Reduce image dimensions in Resize Image and try again; PNG has no target-size mode.

How do downloads, ZIP files and system sharing work?

After generation, choose Download or download the selected batch as a ZIP. Large result groups pause so you can save and release them before continuing. System sharing requires browser and device support; an unavailable or unfinished share leaves Download available.

Can I use another tool without downloading first?

Yes. After generating a result, choose Next edit and a compatible tool. A single-image tool requires exactly one selected batch result. The generated files become the new inputs; this handoff lasts only for the current session.
