When to Water Monstera: Check the Soil, Not Just the Calendar
There is no universal number of days between monstera waterings. Ask whether the pot needs water today rather than treating a weekly schedule as a rule. This guide covers indoor plants in potting mix, not hydroponics.

Check before watering
- Feel the mix a few centimetres below the surface, avoiding large roots. A dry surface does not prove the rootball is dry.
- If the pot is safe to lift, compare its weight with your own notes from after watering. Do not lift a heavy plant just to weigh it.
- Check the saucer or outer pot for standing water and confirm that drainage holes are clear.
- Wait and check again if the upper mix is dry but the deeper mix remains noticeably wet.
The RHS monstera guide recommends allowing the mix to become almost dry before watering thoroughly and avoiding prolonged standing water. A surface check is only a starting clue, especially in a large pot.
Keep a record when conditions change
A move, cooler weather, repotting or the start of indoor heating can make an old reminder less useful. Record how the mix actually behaves after each change instead of copying another grower’s interval. Include the location and potting mix so later entries have context.
Water the rootball, then drain
When water is needed, apply it slowly across the mix, let excess water escape and empty the saucer. Water rushing down the pot’s edge does not necessarily mean the rootball has absorbed it. Check for dry areas rather than marking the job complete from runoff alone. Maryland Extension’s indoor watering guidance explains general watering practice.
Does drooping mean thirst?
Not always. Check moisture first. Adding water to an already wet pot can worsen the situation; persistent decline needs further investigation.
Use a Bloomia reminder as a prompt to inspect, then record watering only when you do it. A manual entry might read: “October 1: upper mix dry, deeper mix still damp; no water added.” Learn how to organize these observations in a plant care journal, or read the monstera care guide for broader care.
For a step-by-step check across different plants, see when to water houseplants. If the mix repeatedly stays wet, follow the wet-soil investigation before adding more water.
