EDIT A GPX FILE

How to trim and split a GPX track online

Remove an unwanted start or finish, delete a middle section without a connecting line, or split a GPX track into two using map and elevation selections.

Choose the track and the operation

Use trimming to keep part of a recording, range deletion to remove a continuous section, and splitting to keep both sides as separate tracks. These operations work on an existing track. If your file contains a route, select it and choose “Convert to track” first.

Keep the original GPX or make a project duplicate before experimenting. The examples below use point positions along a single segment; they are not geographic coordinates.

Keep the middle and remove an unwanted start or finish

Suppose a track contains points 1–100 and you want only 21–80. “Keep range” keeps both selected boundary points as well as every point between them.

  1. Import the GPX and select the intended track by its name in Files.
  2. Click the map or elevation profile at the first point to keep. Fine-tune with previous/next, then click “Set start”.
  3. Select the last point to keep and click “Set end”. Check both endpoints in Data.
  4. Click “Keep range”. Inspect the new beginning and finish; undo if either boundary was wrong.

Delete a middle section without drawing a shortcut

If instead you select 41–60 and choose “Delete range”, points 1–40 and 61–100 remain as separate segments. The app does not draw a new line from 40 to 61 or include that gap in distance.

Deleting only a single point with “Delete point” has a different result: the remaining points within that segment stay connected. Use range deletion when the surviving sections should stay disconnected. A range follows the stored point order, so crossing an existing segment gap still selects the intervening points in that order.

Split a GPX track into two tracks

Select an interior track point and click “Split here”. Splitting at point 50 produces one track ending at 50 and another starting at 50. The shared boundary is duplicated intentionally so both tracks retain their endpoint.

Select each result in Files and inspect it. To download them separately, select one result and export “Selected”, then repeat for the other. Exporting All content puts both into one GPX file; it does not create two downloads.

Check data and export scope after trimming

Retained points keep their recorded time, elevation and extensions; trimming does not resample them. Statistics update for the surviving geometry and segment boundaries. Removing a section can change duration because segment gaps are excluded.

Choose “Export GPX”, select the intended objects, wait for preparation and click “Download GPX”. Map visibility does not define export scope. Reopen the download and check the object list, endpoints and gaps.

Trimming is not a complete anonymization tool: other tracks, waypoints, names, timestamps or source metadata can remain. Inspect the whole chosen export before sharing a personal recording.
